#1 - Keep Your Drains Free And Clear
If you’re cooking for your significant other this Valentine’s Day, then make sure you don’t incidentally put any food waste down the drain (unless you have a garbage disposal, but more on that later). Remember, the drains in your sink aren’t designed to handle food waste.
However, everyone’s human. We all make mistakes sometimes. So don’t fret. No one is going to get mad at you for accidentally putting some leftover food down the drain. If you wind up with a clogged drain this Valentine’s Day, we can always come out to help.

If you have a garbage disposal, then you’re probably aware that you can put some types of food waste down the drain without having to worry. However, for some reason, several people seem to think that they can put anything left on their plates down their disposal. As lovely as that would be, it’s not based in reality. Unfortunately, there are several things your disposal simply cannot handle. So, to prevent misuse of your garbage disposal, avoid the following items:
- Eggshells
- Coffee grounds
- Bones
- Grease, fat, or oil
- Celery and other tough raw vegetables
- Potato peels and different vegetable skins
- Fruit seeds or pits
- Pasta

#3 - Find Your Main Water Shutoff Valve
One of the most important things you can do to prevent plumbing disasters is to find your main water shutoff valve. Why is that important, you ask? Well, in the event of a plumbing emergency or flood, you can prevent a lot of damage by turning off the main water supply to your home or business.
Generally, your main water shutoff valve is outside your house, facing the street. However, depending on your home or business, you may find your shutoff valve on the side or behind your property. If you don’t know where yours is, we highly recommend you stop whatever it is you’re doing and go outside to find it right away. It really can save you from severe damage in the event of a plumbing emergency.
